LiMPETS is a community science program that monitors the coastal ecosystems of California and helps youth develop a scientific understanding of the ocean. LiMPETS monitors the biology in rocky intertidal and sandy beach ecosystems and aims to provide publicly accessible, scientifically sound, long-term data to inform marine resource management and the scientific community.
Did you know that purple urchins have tube feet they use to move along surfaces and bring food to their mouths. They`ll reach out in water for anything they can use as camouflage too, like rocks or shells.
Remember to get outside and catch those last moments of summer before they`re gone.

Keighley Lane is the New Southern Region Program Coordinator. Her region includes Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles Counties. When Keighley isn`t working on LiMPETS programming, she`s a member of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Dive Team. @NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary is home to some great dive spots, but even better tide pooling, with November being the start of late afternoon tides. Keighley`s favorite tide pools are up further north in the San Juan Islands of Washington, which have abundant invertebrates and some of our very own LiMPETS study species as well.

Hannah Sarver is the Central Region Program Coordinator. If there`s any team member who can help you find those hidden gems of the intertidal, it`s Hannah. Her luck of seeing things like octopuses or rare jellyfish is renowned. She grew up in a landlocked state but has a great love and passion for the ocean. She`s also worked on every coast line in the U.S!

If you`ve gone on a LiMPETS Monitoring trip along the Northern coast you`ve probably worked with Jaclyn. She`s the Northern Region Coordinator and brings a wealth of scientific knowledge to LiMPETS. She also supervises our honorary canine team member, Dorid. Dorid, named after nudibranchs, keeps team moral high on those long field work days!

What`s better than students playing on the beach? Teachers enjoying the swash zone!
We are looking forward to our upcoming sandy beach teacher workshops happening in San Francisco and Monterey.

Our Monterey Bay LiMPETS Coordinator was recently in the Seattle, Washington area for a conference. Of course she had to check out the local tidepools. They didn’t disappoint.

CREATURE FEATURE!!!!
Black Chiton (Katharina tunicata)
The black katy chiton, black Leather chiton, black chiton, leather chiton, or Kasuqix in the indigenous Aleut language; this chiton is known by many names!
They can be identified by the eight white distinct plates along their back surrounded by a leathery girdle of black flesh. They are well adapted to survive out of water for extended periods and unlike other intertidal organisms, they can tolerate direct sunlight.
Black chitons use their radula - a structure of tiny teeth - to scrape algae and other encrusted material off of rocks into their mouths. They have been observed eating several species of brown and red algae as well as, sponges, small barnacles, bryozoans, and polychaetas.
Black chitons are great at blending into their surroundings. This helps them avoid predators like sea urchins, leather stars, black oyster catchers, glaucous-winged gulls, and humans!

We`re starting a new feature on our page called Picture A Scientist. This series is inspired by the film, Picture A Scientist, that exposes real challenges faced by those who have been excluded from the field of science. We`re going to introduce you to the new wave of distinguished scientists bringing their full authentic selves to their work.
Our first feature highlights intertidal ecologist and science communicator extraordinaire @dahoodscientist . Check out our full interview with Ric on @farallonesnews website - Farallones.org/latest-news/
