LiMPETS is a community science program that monitors the coastal ecosystems of California and helps youth develop a scientific understanding of the ocean. LiMPETS monitors the biology in rocky intertidal and sandy beach ecosystems and aims to provide publicly accessible, scientifically sound, long-term data to inform marine resource management and the scientific community.

Alaria marginata, the Winged Kelp or Wakame, is a brown algae found in the low to subtidal north of Point Conception. 🪽🌿
Even though this kelp has a chemical defense against its mollusk predators, it`s completely edible (& delicious) to humans. 🥘🥢

🦇 The Bat Star (Patiria miniata) ⭐️
🌠 You may have seen bats fly around in the night sky, but have you ever seen them in the sea? Behold, the beautiful bat found in tidepools along the west coast - the bat star! Its name comes from the bat-like webbing between its arms.
Bat stars have a wide range in color, but most are blood red or pumpkin orange! 🎃 They have eyespots at the end of each arm that can detect light, and their tube feet have sensors to help them “smell” their prey.
🧟 These omnivorous scavengers have a very diverse diet, including other sea stars, tunicate worms, algae, and the decaying tissue of dead animals. Once they’ve found a tasty treat, they extend one of their two stomachs from their mouth cavity and begin digesting their prey, before slowly dragging their food back into their body to finish digesting with their second stomach. They are eaten by other sea stars, mollusks, and crustaceans. To avoid predation, bat stars cover themselves in a repulsive-tasting mucus.
All you need is a low tide to spend this spooky season searching the intertidal for bat stars! 🦇🌙
